Digital Eye Strain and Computers
- Posted on: Sep 15 2018
More and more daily life is spent on screens. We work on computers and find recipes for dinner on our cell phones. We even find jobs and meet friends and find new romantic partners, all with the help of a little digital screen. But just because we can spend our whole lives on screens, doesn’t mean that we should.
In fact, the more information we learn about eye health and digital screens, the more we try to limit the amount of time we spend looking at them. Keep reading to learn about Digital Eye Strain and how you can prevent it.
What is Digital Eye Strain?
Digital Eye Strain, also referred to as Computer Vision Syndrome, is a catch-all term for issues that stem from looking at digital screens. Eye pain, fatigue, dry eyes, and blurred vision can all result from extended hours looking at the blue light that comes from our screens.
Who is at risk?
Unfortunately, everyone who looks at a computer or digital screen for long periods of time is at risk for developing Digital Eye Strain. If you’ve ever looked away from your computer and had a hard time focusing your eyes, you’ve experienced Digital Eye Strain. Those of us who have eye issues (like the many of us who wear glasses or contacts) are at a special risk for Digital Eye Strain. Those over forty years old have increased risk since our eyes start changing with age after we hit forty.
Preventing Digital Eye Strain
To prevent complications and issues that stem from looking at screens for too long, consider making an effort to limit unnecessary time on screens. Limit time spent on online games or apps, and set an alarm to let you know when your time is up. Also, take frequent breaks to give your eyes a chance to rest. Every twenty minutes, look up and find a spot in the distance of about twenty feet away. Looking out a window, for example, for just twenty seconds can help the muscles in your eyes relax and limit Digital Eye Strain.
